Everyone says AI makes product designers ten times faster. So why does so much of what product designers create feel like the same copy-and-pasted template? Speed is one thing; managers tell you to 'just ship it' within two weeks instead of four. And maybe, just maybe, we're all missing a few key design skills.

In this episode of The Design Table Podcast, Tyler and Nick make the case for deep design skills: the craft knowledge that separates you from every 'AI-native' product designer out there. No "AI will replace us" doom talk. Instead, they focus on the hard skills that still make work feel handcrafted and enjoyable.

Tyler explains why reading patterns, hierarchy and button placement are where ROI comes in and why moving fast with AI only works once you've invested three to six months in a properly documented design system. Without that, it's garbage in, garbage out. Nick shares how he keeps sharpening his own Claude skills project by project.

There's practical design-advice, too. Nick shares a hero section a listener built as a take-home task from an earlier episode, and both review it live: the copy, the hierarchy, the competing fonts, the missing reason to click, and how to tease your work above the fold. Nick also explains how a little GSAP or Framer Motion can take your hero section from forgettable to memorable.

They wrap up with the fundamentals: color theory (and why everyone picks blue), cultural color differences, and why designing a page in black and white first forces you to focus on deep design knowledge like gestalt principles, spacing and hierarchy.

Key takeaways

"When you come to someone's hero, you should be yelling out loud what should I learn in this first three seconds: this is who I am, I do this type of work through my design superpower, and then you qualify it with your subheader."
